Sumic IT Solutions Ltd participated in a stakeholder engagement workshop focused on the development of cybersecurity standards for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Uganda.
The workshop was held on 31 March 2026 at the National ICT Innovation Hub and was organized by the National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U). It brought together key stakeholders from Uganda's technology and business ecosystem to discuss the growing need for practical, scalable, and locally relevant cybersecurity frameworks for SMEs.
Addressing Growing Cybersecurity Risks
As Ugandan SMEs increasingly adopt digital technologies to streamline their operations, engage customers, manage data, and meet regulatory requirements, their exposure to cybersecurity threats is also increasing.
Businesses face risks including fraud, data breaches, unauthorized access, and system vulnerabilities, making cybersecurity an increasingly important component of digital transformation.
The development of cybersecurity standards specifically designed for SMEs can help businesses establish practical security measures that match their operational realities while strengthening trust among customers, partners, and other stakeholders.
Sharing International Experience
During the panel session, Cirus Sumika, CEO of Sumic IT Solutions Ltd, shared insights drawn from both local industry experience and international exposure.
He highlighted lessons from his participation in the UK Trade Partnerships (UKTP) Programme, implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC). As part of the programme, he received training and exposure in areas including:
GDPR and data protection
Export marketing plan development
International standards readiness
Certification preparation
These experiences reinforced the importance of data protection, regulatory compliance, and adherence to international standards for businesses seeking to operate and compete in global markets.
Building a More Secure Digital Economy
Sumic IT Solutions commends NITA-U for spearheading efforts to develop a localized cybersecurity standard for SMEs.
A practical cybersecurity framework can help Ugandan businesses strengthen their resilience, build customer confidence, protect sensitive information, and participate more securely in the digital economy.
For Sumic IT Solutions Ltd, cybersecurity is an important part of responsible digital transformation. As businesses adopt new technologies, they must also ensure that their systems are secure, compliant, resilient, and prepared for the future.
